Carbon monoxide has been in the news a lot with reference to incidents at home and abroad. The government, Health & Safety, Corgi / Gas Safe and its Corgi / Gas Safe registered members are all working closely together to minimize all risks and problems associated with carbon monoxide. "Recommendations being proposed are that gas appliances are checked/serviced on a 12month basis by a Corgi / Gas Safe registered installer, approved carbon monoxide detectors in homes and rented properties are also strongly recommended but are not there as a substitute for regular checks and servicing" (Health & Safety).
Carbon monoxide fumes are particularly dangerous as they cannot be seen, smelt or tasted and can kill quickly without warning - as proven by the tragic deaths of Christianne Shepherd and Robert Shepherd whilst on a family holiday in Corfu. Around 20 lives are lost every year due to carbon monoxide as their appliances haven't been properly maintained ("We hardly use the fire, if its been on 6 times I would be shocked." "It looks ok and we have had no problems with it," these are the common phrases heard from customers.)
Carbon monoxide binds into the space in your blood cells (specifically in the haemoglobin molecules) which is usually dedicated to transporting oxygen and carbon dioxide around your body. Each affected molecule is rendered totally disabled. Disable enough haemoglobin molecules and oxygen can no longer be carried around your body and carbon dioxide can no longer be removed. This leads to tiredness, lethargy, sleep, unconciousness and eventually death due to asphyxiation..
Carbon monoxide poisoning is measured in a percentage starting at just 0.1% = Tiredness - 1.0% = Tragic consequences. Carbon monoxide can kill; the aim is to increase public knowledge and work together to prevent any more tragedies.
